{"id":175181,"date":"2016-08-08T11:01:55","date_gmt":"2016-08-08T09:01:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=175181"},"modified":"2016-08-08T11:03:11","modified_gmt":"2016-08-08T09:03:11","slug":"our-weak-network-stopped-us-from-cutting-prices-mtn-sa-ceo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/175181-our-weak-network-stopped-us-from-cutting-prices-mtn-sa-ceo.html","title":{"rendered":"Our weak network stopped us from cutting prices: MTN SA CEO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/174918-mtn-south-africa-loses-subscribers.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>MTN\u2019s latest financial results<\/strong><\/a> show that the company\u2019s subscriber base\u00a0in South Africa has dropped to 29.8 million.<\/p>\n<p>MTN South Africa\u2019s prepaid and post-paid segments declined by 2.7% to 24.7 million and 2.1% to 5.1 million, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The company said network outages, competition, and economic pressure impacting consumer spending affected\u00a0its growth.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessdaytv.co.za\/shows\/newsleader\/2016\/08\/05\/mtn-pays-dearly-for-fine-advice\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>In an interview with Business Day TV<\/strong><\/a>, MTN SA CEO Mteto Nyati said Vodacom\u2019s aggressive promotions \u2013 like its 1GB data plus R300 free airtime \u2013 saw its prepaid subscribers move to Vodacom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we looked at those promotions, we felt that we did not want to respond to Vodacom\u2019s promotions,\u201d said Nyati.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe did not want to respond, largely because our focus right now is to make sure our network is of quality, and should be better. It should be the same or better than Vodacom,\u201d said Nyati.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.timeslive.co.za\/sundaytimes\/businesstimes\/2016\/08\/07\/Dropped-calls-dog-MTN-after-rough-year\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>He told the Sunday Times<\/strong><\/a> that &#8220;we could not bring new subscribers onto a weak network. We had to take care of that first\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe key that we have as a business right now is let us fix the basics.
