{"id":175775,"date":"2016-08-13T10:29:06","date_gmt":"2016-08-13T08:29:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=175775"},"modified":"2016-08-13T10:30:42","modified_gmt":"2016-08-13T08:30:42","slug":"dstv-competition-investigation-delayed-icasa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/175775-dstv-competition-investigation-delayed-icasa.html","title":{"rendered":"DStv competition investigation delayed: ICASA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) announced that it has extended\u00a0its deadline for responses to its questionnaire on the subscription TV market.<\/p>\n<p>This is after it received requests from stakeholders to give them more time, ICASA said.<\/p>\n<p>Originally, pay TV players had to\u00a0submit their responses by 12 August. This deadline has been extended to 2 September.<\/p>\n<p>ICASA initially planned to publish a discussion document\u00a0before the end of September 2016, and expected to finish the entire investigation into South Africa&#8217;s pay TV market by the end of the financial year.<\/p>\n<p>Among the questions ICASA asked were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>What has the impact of OTT services been on your business?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cOTT\u201d stands for \u201cover-the-top\u201d, and refers to services like Netflix, ShowMax, iTunes Movies, and Google Play Movies.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>What are your views on a la carte vs bouquet model in payTV?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>ICASA is asking what stakeholders think of being able to choose their own channels, rather than buying fixed packages of channels.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>How have the prices you pay for rights to key content assets changed through time?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>MultiChoice said these costs have increased significantly over the years.<\/p>\n<p>The weakness of the rand increased costs even further as much of its content is bought in US dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Other questions included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What are your processes for acquiring international content?<\/li>\n<li>Do you consider the payTV market to be competitive?
