{"id":177425,"date":"2016-08-29T14:37:44","date_gmt":"2016-08-29T12:37:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=177425"},"modified":"2016-08-29T14:41:01","modified_gmt":"2016-08-29T12:41:01","slug":"beware-of-windows-update-ransomware","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/software\/177425-beware-of-windows-update-ransomware.html","title":{"rendered":"Beware of Windows Update ransomware"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An AVG researcher has discovered a new piece of ransomware called Fantom, which fools users by posing as a\u00a0critical Windows update.<\/p>\n<p>According to a report by <a href=\"http:\/\/hothardware.com\/news\/fantom-ransomware-poses-as-windows-update-encrypts-files\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>HotHardware<\/strong><\/a>, the ransomware takes the appearance of a\u00a0Windows screen &#8220;installing an update&#8221; if executed.<\/p>\n<p>What it is actually doing, though, is encrypting a user&#8217;s documents and files.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Fantom is based on the open-source EDA2 ransomware project, and there&#8217;s no way to decrypt the files without the culprit&#8217;s help,&#8221; stated the report.<\/p>\n<p>The scam starts with a pop-up which is labelled as a critical update from Microsoft.
