{"id":177845,"date":"2016-08-31T18:13:41","date_gmt":"2016-08-31T16:13:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=177845"},"modified":"2016-08-31T18:16:18","modified_gmt":"2016-08-31T16:16:18","slug":"macos-bittorrent-client-infected-with-malware","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/177845-macos-bittorrent-client-infected-with-malware.html","title":{"rendered":"MacOS BitTorrent client infected with malware"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Transmission BitTorrent client for\u00a0MacOS has again been infected with malware,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/torrentfreak.com\/attackers-infect-transmission-torrent-client-with-os-x-malware-160831\/\" target=\"_blank\">TorrentFreak reports<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Transmission confirmed the attack, saying its servers were compromised and steps have been taken to ensure greater security in future.<\/p>\n<p>Transmission has been compromised twice this year. In March, security researchers found <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/157633-apple-users-targeted-in-ransomware-attack.html\">KeRanger ransomware<\/a><\/strong> embedded in the\u00a0BitTorrent client&#8217;s installer.<\/p>\n<p>The new malware is called <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.welivesecurity.com\/2016\/07\/06\/new-osxkeydnap-malware-hungry-credentials\/\" target=\"_blank\">OSX\/Keydnap<\/a><\/strong>, named\u00a0by ESET when discovered last month.<\/p>\n<p>ESET said\u00a0the\u00a0malware is designed to steal the content of your MacOS keychain while maintaining a permanent backdoor.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The OSX\/Keydnap backdoor is equipped with a mechanism to gather and exfiltrate passwords and keys stored in OS X\u2019s keychain,&#8221; said ESET.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The author took a proof-of-concept example available on Github called Keychaindump. It reads securityd\u2019s memory and searches for the decryption key for the user\u2019s keychain. This process is described <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/forensic.n0fate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Keychain-Analysis-with-Mac-OS-X-Memory-Forensics.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">in a paper by K. Lee and H.
