How much bandwidth should employees have, and how much data should they be allowed to use?

“This answer changes,” says TeleMasters CEO Mario Pretorius, “but changes in the same direction: more.”

He continues: “The fasters the data speed at the desk, the more data can be consumed in a given time.”

The first hurdle is then whether a business should opt for an unrestricted, uncapped data plan.

“Uncapped, yes. Unrestricted, no,” says Pretorius.

“People and business need constantly changing amounts of data. Dropbox files arrive from regions. Bulk emails must be sent. Software updates are requested.

“The list of data requirement grows exponentially.”

The restrictions, he says, should be on the non-essential use.

“The IT policy must contain restrictions that cover TOR downloads, unvetted programmes installation and abusive personal use.

“Downloading IOS updates via the WiFi may be ok but uploading holiday videos to iCloud is not.”

The greatest effect of the speed and capacity decisions is on employee time.

“People cost us R1 per minute per R10,000 salary. Fast data at the desk saves waiting time that interrupts concentration,” Pretorius continues.

“We recommend choosing a data partner that supplies uncapped and unshaped access, this allows the business to access cloud services, cloud back-ups and virtual machines in their IT progression.

“For speed we recommend at least 500 kbps per person – a cost of a few cents per minute. We find a tremendous surge in productivity where the restrictions on the future is lifted.”

Pretorius listed his 10 reasons for empowering users with unlimited data and fast access:

Fast data at the desk increases the speed at which employees can use the cloud, the web, mail and apps.

Fast data makes an enterprise WiFi feasible as the WiFi speed remains fast.

Fast data makes it feasible to run cloud hosted services like Pastel and a quality voice service.

Fast data makes it possible to run Windows 365 and files from the cloud at no lag time.

Fast data makes cloud based back-up and recovery economic and time-feasible.

Fast data makes the use of virtual machines economic and powerful.

Fast data unlocks collaboration between sites on shared files real and useful.

Fast data makes video conferencing a real-time pleasure.

Fast data prepared the platform for virtual reality applications.

Fast data makes the update of mobile and web apps and storage quick and efficient.

Fast data speed and limitless data size is your FutureProof guarantee from TeleMasters.

“Bandwidth is addictive” is a well-established IT mantra.
