A recent update on DStv Mobile’s Twitter account<\/a> revealed that the mobile broadcaster is planning an April 2011 launch for their “Android and Nokia” applications.<\/p>\n

MultiChoice launched two mobile TV services last year. One is a streaming service over Vodacom’s 3G network while the other is a broadcast service over a DVB-H network.<\/p>\n

The applications announced in DStv Mobile’s latest tweet seem to be for the DVB-H broadcasting service, as MultiChoice said last year<\/a> that such applications were in development.<\/p>\n

The purpose of the applications would be to interface with MultiChoice’s “Drifta” device which costs around R600 at retail.<\/p>\n

The Drifta is capable of receiving MultiChoice’s DVB-H broadcasts and sending it to connected devices over a Wi-Fi connection.<\/p>\n

Currently the Drifta only supports Windows PCs and Apple iOS devices such as the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.<\/p>\n

It is unclear what the minimum hardware requirements are for Android or Symbian devices to run the DStv Mobile application, but given the broadcast resolution<\/a> it would be fair to assume a minimum display resolution of 320×240 as a requirement.<\/p>\n

DStv Mobile’s DVB-H broadcasting service is due for commercial launch on 1 April 2011 at a cost of R36 per month. Until that date, the service is available without subscription fees to those with supported DVB-H devices.<\/p>\n
