Vodacom subscribers with HTC Desire smartphones should have started receiving updates for the device’s underlying operating system, Vodacom has confirmed.<\/p>\n
Until now these updates for the HTC Desire have only been available to MTN subscribers, who launched firmware over-the-air (FOTA) updates on its network late last year.<\/p>\n
Leaf International Communications, official distributors of HTC products in South Africa, recently revealed that FOTA would become operator agnostic<\/a> towards the end of January 2011.<\/p>\n HTC Desire users on Vodacom seem to be the first beneficiaries of this policy.<\/p>\n Cell C didn’t officially confirm whether the updates were available on its network. However it stands to reason that if Leaf is busy enabling updates for all devices on its servers that HTC Desire devices on other networks will be included.<\/p>\n While only the HTC Desire is currently receiving updates, Leaf said previously that updates for the Hero, Legend and Wildfire will become available at the end of January 2011 as well. The recently launched Desire HD and Desire Z will also be enabled to receive updates, according to Leaf.<\/p>\n The HTC Legend and Wildfire will receive an upgrade to Android 2.2 “FroYo” while the Hero is set to receive an upgrade to Android 2.1 “Éclair.”<\/p>\n Leaf also said that the devices that will receive upgrades to Android 2.3 “Gingerbread” will be confirmed soon.<\/p>\n
