{"id":180200,"date":"2016-09-20T14:55:20","date_gmt":"2016-09-20T12:55:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=180200"},"modified":"2016-09-20T14:56:36","modified_gmt":"2016-09-20T12:56:36","slug":"telkom-uncapped-lte-excessive-users-no-longer-throttled","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/180200-telkom-uncapped-lte-excessive-users-no-longer-throttled.html","title":{"rendered":"Telkom uncapped LTE \u201cexcessive users\u201d no longer throttled"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Telkom appears to have un-throttled multiple\u00a0uncapped LTE accounts on its network following complaints from subscribers.<\/p>\n<p>The company faced backlash from clients on its uncapped LTE packages earlier this month when they discovered they had been \u201csoft capped\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>This came after Telkom informed uncapped clients it would enforce its acceptable use policy (AUP) more aggressively by throttling connections.<\/p>\n<p>From\u00a0September, subscribers said\u00a0their connections were throttled &#8211; with reports stating\u00a0the operator had introduced new usage thresholds.<\/p>\n<p>Telkom previously stated its AUP targeted \u201cbandwidth-intensive protocols\u201d being used to a point where they degraded the quality of the network for all users.<\/p>\n<p>It defined these as peer-to-peer services like BitTorrent, and news server downloads.<\/p>\n<p>Downloads over these protocols were originally <a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadband\/128302-telkom-r599-uncapped-lte-fair-use-policy.html\"><strong>limited to 50GB per month<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">A new soft cap<\/h3>\n<p>Telkom customers said a separate 250GB usage threshold was introduced at the start of September.<\/p>\n<p>Subscribers said\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/834877-New-LTE-AUP-from-September-2016\/page23\"><strong>Telkom throttled uncapped LTE connections<\/strong><\/a> to 4Mbps after around 185GB of data usage. When you hit 250GB, your connection was throttled to 256kbps.<\/p>\n<p>The soft cap functioned separately to\u00a0the 50GB limit\u00a0for \u201cbandwidth-intensive\u201d usage.
