ZDNet has published a ranking<\/a><\/strong> of the most popular programming languages by\u00a0combining the metrics\u00a0used in various other rankings.<\/p>\n

Columnist\u00a0David Gewirtz explains that answering the question “Which programming language\u00a0is the\u00a0most popular?” is no simple task as there is\u00a0no shortage of\u00a0measures you can use to gauge popularity.<\/p>\n

In the end he combined the rankings of several sources, including\u00a0Pypl, Tiobe, and three different measures from the IEEE.<\/p>\n

The IEEE rankings include IEEE Jobs which looks at job listings at Dice.com and CareerBuilder, IEEE Open which looks at the number of open source projects, and IEEE Trending which looks at languages that appear to be growing.<\/p>\n

Based on the analysis, the C family\u00a0of languages still dominates, and the author recommended learning a language like Java or C++\u00a0as he believes they\u00a0open you to the rest of the family.<\/p>\n

After learning Java or C++, he recommends you learn JavaScript as more web projects need good JavaScript skills.<\/p>\n

With JavaScript under the belt you should move on to learning\u00a0PHP, Swift, or Python, depending on the work you want to do.<\/p>\n

Gewirtz said that once you know a language from\u00a0each of these\u00a0three sets well, you can\u00a0learn\u00a0extra\u00a0languages\u00a0and\u00a0frameworks as you need them\u00a0with relative ease.<\/p>\n

To learn languages you must build this in\u00a0them, he said. “Programming is not just an intellectual exercise. You have to actually make stuff.”<\/p>\n
