An Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa (ASA) complaint against Telkom\u2019s FreeMe advertising forced the company to more clearly describe their product offerings.<\/p>\n
The advertisement for Telkom\u2019s FreeMe data plans that appeared on its website stated “Starting at R99.00 PM x 24\u201d.<\/p>\n
One consumer lodged an ASA complaint against the advertising, arguing you have to add a handset to the deal, which will lift the lowest price to R199 per month.<\/p>\n
Telkom responded, saying the FreeMe offer does indeed start at R99.00 per month, but this is for a SIM-only deal which is only available at its stores. Customers cannot buy this product online.<\/p>\n
Telkom said the fact that this was not communicated on the website was an honest mistake, and there was no intention to mislead consumers.<\/p>\n
Telkom apologised for the omission, and submitted that it is amending its website to reflect the correct information.<\/p>\n
The ASA accepted Telkom\u2019s explanation and commitment to change the advertising on its website, without ruling on the matter.<\/p>\n
