{"id":181752,"date":"2016-10-06T15:27:11","date_gmt":"2016-10-06T13:27:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=181752"},"modified":"2016-10-06T15:28:43","modified_gmt":"2016-10-06T13:28:43","slug":"vodacom-mtn-cell-c-and-telkom-fail-network-quality-tests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/181752-vodacom-mtn-cell-c-and-telkom-fail-network-quality-tests.html","title":{"rendered":"Vodacom, MTN, Cell C, and Telkom fail network quality tests"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) has published its quarterly quality of service (QoS) monitoring reports.<\/p>\n<p>The tests focussed on voice services provided in Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal.<\/p>\n<p>ICASA said the purpose of the reports is to identify shortcomings in the services offered by the mobile operators.<\/p>\n<p>In Limpopo, the monitoring was conducted in Ga-Riba\/Ga-Nkoana, Tzaneen, Hoedspruit, Modjadjiskloof, and Bela-Bela, covering a distance of 3,358km.<\/p>\n<p>In KwaZulu-Natal, the monitoring was conducted in Cato Ridge, Pietermaritzburg, Richmond, Mpophomeni, and Howick, covering a distance of 2,574km.<\/p>\n<p>ICASA said it conducted the monitoring through drive-testing using TEMS Symphony equipment. The metrics used were Call Setup Success Rate and Drop Call Rate.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Limpopo<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Telkom did not meet the Average Drop Call Rate (ADCR) target, while Cell C, MTN, and Vodacom met the target of below 3%.<\/li>\n<li>None of the operators met the Average Call Set-up Success Rate (ACSSR) target of 98%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Operators said they would remedy the problems by improving site availability, conducting radio optimisation, and adding new sites on the network to improve areas with poor coverage.<\/p>\n<p>In the areas where Cell C and Telkom did not have continuous coverage, they relied on their roaming partners.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Limpopo-CSR.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" wp-image-181760\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Limpopo-CDR.png\" alt=\"limpopo-cdr\" width=\"581\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">KwaZulu-Natal<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Vodacom met the ADCR, while the\u00a0other operators did not meet the target of below 3%.<\/li>\n<li>MTN and Telkom met the ACSSR, while Vodacom and Cell C did not meet the target of above 95%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Telkom stated that the lack of 900MHz spectrum is a challenge when\u00a0providing rural coverage and that it relies on MTN roaming to provide services to consumers in certain areas.<\/p>\n<p>The high dropped call rate was due to a lack of seamless handover between its network and MTN\u2019s network, said Telkom.<\/p>\n<p><a
