{"id":18213,"date":"2011-02-02T17:06:00","date_gmt":"2011-02-02T15:06:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2011-02-02T17:06:00","modified_gmt":"2011-02-02T15:06:00","slug":"cell-c-puzzled-by-asa-power-to-you-ruling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/18213-cell-c-puzzled-by-asa-power-to-you-ruling.html","title":{"rendered":"Cell C puzzled by ASA \u2018Power to You\u2019 ruling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A battle over the slogan &#8220;Power to You&#8221; has been playing itself out at the <a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/306365-ASA-Advertising-Standards-Authority\" target=\"_self\" title=\"ASA\">Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa (ASA)<\/a> after a complaint by Vodacom shareholder Vodafone.<\/p>\n<p>Vodafone claimed that it has been using the tagline &ldquo;Power to you&rdquo; in the company&rsquo;s global marketing campaign (which included South Africa) in 2009, accusing <a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/213919-Cell-C?highlight=Cell+C\" target=\"_self\" title=\"Cell C\">Cell C<\/a> of the &lsquo;unauthorised and offending use of the slogan which was blatantly and slavishly misappropriated [with] the advertiser passing it off as its own.&rsquo;<\/p>\n<p>Cell C hit back, saying that it was using the slogan as part of its own rebranding campaign and widely registered trademarks for &ldquo;the power is in your hands&rdquo; as well as &ldquo;power to you&rdquo; as part of their brand protection around the pay off line.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The slogan &lsquo;power to you&rsquo; has been registered as a trademark for Cell C, and this was done prior to Vodafone\/<a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/227063-Vodacom?highlight=Vodacom\" target=\"_self\" title=\"Vodacom\">Vodacom<\/a>&rsquo;s applications for the same trademark,&rdquo; Cell C said.<\/p>\n<p>Cell C CEO <a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/210083-Lars-P.-Reichelt\" target=\"_self\" title=\"Lars\">Lars Reichelt<\/a> said today that he is puzzled by the ASA&#8217;s ruling on the use of the term &lsquo;Power to You&rsquo; in their advertising as Cell C was the first company to apply for this slogan to be registered as a trademark in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The ASA has found in favour of Vodafone which is an international company over Cell C which is a South African company in our own territory even though we strongly doubt whether South African consumers would recognise &lsquo;Power to You&rsquo; as being associated with Vodafone,&rdquo; Reichelt said.<\/p>\n<p>Cell C said that they are currently studying the ruling and will decide on their next steps soon.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/307877-Cell-C-perplexed-by-ASA-%91Power-to-You%92-ruling\" target=\"_self\" title=\"Cell C puzzled by ASA &lsquo;Power to You&rsquo; ruling\"><strong>Cell C puzzled by ASA &lsquo;Power to You&rsquo; ruling<\/strong><\/a> &lt;&lt; Comments and views<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The ASA recently ruled that Cell C may not use the term \u2018Power to You\u2019 but this ruling is perplexing said Cell C CEO<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":23,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_sma_x_autopost_status":"idle","_sma_x_autopost_error":"","_sma_x_post_id":"","_sma_facebook_post_id":"","_sma_instagram_post_id":"","_sma_threads_post_id":"","_sma_x_attempts":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[14],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-18213","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-cellular"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/18213"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/23"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=18213"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/18213\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=18213"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=18213"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=18213"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
