{"id":18251,"date":"2011-02-03T18:56:00","date_gmt":"2011-02-03T16:56:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2011-02-03T18:56:00","modified_gmt":"2011-02-03T16:56:00","slug":"telkom-chipac-adsl-llu-forerunner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/telecoms\/18251-telkom-chipac-adsl-llu-forerunner.html","title":{"rendered":"Telkom \u2018Chipac\u2019 &#8211; ADSL LLU forerunner?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Local Loop Unbundling (LLU) is currently on everyone&rsquo;s lips, with consumers pinning their hope on this intervention to make ADSL more affordable and bring more competition to the fixed line broadband market.<\/p>\n<p>The complexities surrounding LLU means that it may take a long time to implement it fully in South Africa, and an intermediate collocation solution may suit both Telkom and its partners better in the short time.<\/p>\n<p>Basic collocation in Telkom&rsquo;s exchanges is nothing new. Neotel CTO Angus Hay previously explained that they are collocating in Telkom exchanges for interconnect purposes with standard collocation agreements in place.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chipac service trialled<br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Good news is that Telkom seems to be trialling a form of LLU\/Bit Stream Access collocation service with Internet Solutions.<\/p>\n<p>Telkom confirmed that they are trialling a &lsquo;customer half internet protocol access&rsquo; (Chipac) service, but would not reveal any other details about the service before its commercial launch.<\/p>\n<p>Internet Solutions (IS) would also not provide details about the agreement with Telkom, merely saying that &ldquo;Chipac is in &lsquo;proof of concept stage&rsquo; and at this stage we are not at liberty to provide information around this due to confidentiality agreements.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>However, industry sources gave some insight into the new Chipac service from Telkom. According to one industry source, it is a bit stream type solution where Telkom carries leased line traffic to the exchange over their infrastructure, aggregates all the traffic destined for a specific ISP, and hands it over to the ISP in the same exchange.<\/p>\n<p>The ISP, which collocates in the Telkom exchange with their own equipment, then carries the traffic from the exchange to their point of presence (PoP) using their own fibre infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>According to another industry player the new Chipac service from Telkom gives a company like IS more control over their leased line traffic, and also incurs cost savings as they only have to pay Telkom for a half circuit rather than the full leased line price.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Forerunner to ADSL bit stream access?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It should be noted that the exact Chipac service description should be seen as speculative at this stage and that it may change before the time of launch &#8211; but the current model may well be a forerunner to a similar ADSL bit stream solution from Telkom.<\/p>\n<p>Such a bit stream access type offering &ndash; where third parties don&rsquo;t get direct access to Telkom&rsquo;s copper infrastructure &#8211; also makes sense to be launched well before full LLU which is a much more complex process to get right.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/308331-Telkom-%E2%80%98Chipac%E2%80%99-service-ADSL-LLU-forerunner\"><strong>Telkom Chipac service<\/strong><\/a> &lt;&lt; Give your views about this service<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Telkom is currently trialling its \u2018customer half internet protocol access\u2019 service, a potential bit stream type solution for ISPs<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":23,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_sma_x_autopost_status":"idle","_sma_x_autopost_error":"","_sma_x_post_id":"","_sma_facebook_post_id":"","_sma_instagram_post_id":"","_sma_x_attempts":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-18251","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-telecoms"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/18251"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/23"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=18251"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/18251\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=18251"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=18251"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=18251"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
