{"id":183630,"date":"2016-10-20T11:53:02","date_gmt":"2016-10-20T09:53:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=183630"},"modified":"2016-10-20T11:57:23","modified_gmt":"2016-10-20T09:57:23","slug":"its-not-about-datamustfall-but-when-data-will-fall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadband\/183630-its-not-about-datamustfall-but-when-data-will-fall.html","title":{"rendered":"It\u2019s not about #DataMustFall, but when data will fall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is not a matter of whether data prices will fall, it is only a matter of when, Telkom\u2019s chief commercial officer Brian Armstrong has said.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the 2016 MyBroadband Conference, Armstrong explained that data from across the telecommunications industry points to a trend of constant improvement.<\/p>\n<p>Speeds and network capacity will increase, latency will decrease, and the cost per bit will come down.<\/p>\n<p>As mobile networks evolve from LTE and 4G technology to 5G in the next 4\u20135 years, Armstrong said speeds will increase tenfold, network capacity will increase a hundredfold, and latency will decrease tenfold.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of the price of data, Armstrong said the cost-per-bit will decrease to a fifth of what it is today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor data to fall, the cost per bit must decrease,\u201d said Armstrong, referring to the <a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/180288-data-and-airtime-prices-must-fall-datamustfall.html\"><strong>#DataMustFall<\/strong><\/a> movement which\u00a0was mentioned ahead of his address.<\/p>\n<p>All trends point to the fact that data prices in South Africa will continue to come down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe it needs to happen differently.
