The higher priority business offerings are understandably higher priced than the lower priority consumer services, and for each service there are also Gold and Platinum options – again with different traffic priority levels.

ATC CEO Wayne de Nobrega made it clear that P2P services are heavily shaped on all their ADSL offerings, an intervention which he described as necessary to ensure network quality and predictability.

ATC ADSL performance

ATC furnished MyBroadband with one of their capped consumer ADSL services with a priority level of 5/6, fitting in below all the business offerings but with a higher network priority level than uncapped consumer services.

MyBroadband tested the service on a 4Mbps ADSL line, and the results looked very promising.

Local speed tests on the ATC consumer ADSL solution produced strong results, with consistent downlink speeds of 3.4Mbps and uplink speeds of just over 0.4Mbps.

An International speed test to London gave a downlink speed of 3.98Mbps and an upload speed of 0.38Mbps. A similar test to New York gave a downlink speed of 2.45Mbps and an uplink speed of 0.4Mbps.

When it came to latency similarly strong results were shown. Local latency was between 15ms (same city) and 50ms (Johannesburg to Cape Town), and all ping tests pointed to a stable and uncongested network.

It should be noted that ping tests to MWEB pointed to international routing, but de Nobrega said that they already have their peering agreements with MWEB in place and will soon start to interconnect with MWEB directly which will reduce the need to route traffic internationally.

A quick BitTorrent test showed no real signs of heavy shaping, with popular torrent files downloading at speeds of well over 3Mbps during business hours. This may however be a result of a great deal of unused capacity, and hence can change when the network gets busier.

The ATC consumer ADSL offering currently performs extremely well, with high download and upload speeds and low latency. This performance is at least on par with and in some cases better than most consumer and business services.

The real test for ATC will come when their ADSL services hit the retail channel through Altech Autopage and other ISP partners, resulting in more traffic on their network.

De Nobrega said that they have a strict ‘70% capacity network upgrade policy’ and with a flexible new generation network, ATC should be able to stay ahead of the growth in ADSL traffic.

If ATC are able to maintain the current service levels many consumers and businesses may start to use them – especially those interested in performance and stability rather than merely price.

Altech TC ADSL tested << Comments and views

Altech Technology Concepts recently launched their new consumer and business ADSL offering.
