{"id":187521,"date":"2016-11-16T12:02:13","date_gmt":"2016-11-16T10:02:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=187521"},"modified":"2016-11-16T12:02:13","modified_gmt":"2016-11-16T10:02:13","slug":"android-phones-leaking-private-data-to-china","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/187521-android-phones-leaking-private-data-to-china.html","title":{"rendered":"Android phones leaking private data to China"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kryptowire has <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kryptowire.com\/adups_security_analysis.html\" target=\"_blank\">released a report<\/a><\/strong> describing how certain Android devices collected personal data and transmitted it to third-party servers without consent.<\/p>\n<p>The backdoors were found in a firmware that ships with devices such as the BLU R1 HD, which was available through major US retailers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These devices transmitted user and device information, including the full body of text messages, contact lists, call history with full telephone numbers, and unique device identifiers,&#8221; said Kryptowire.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The firmware could target specific users and text messages matching remotely-defined keywords. The firmware also collected and transmitted information about the use of applications [and] bypassed the Android permission model.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Data transmission occurred every 72 hours for text messages and call log information, and every 24 hours for other information.
