<\/a><\/p>\nAkamai has released its Q3 2016 State of the Internet Security Report, which shows a huge increase in DDoS attacks across the world.<\/p>\n
The report uses data gathered from the Akamai Intelligent Platform and provides an analysis of the current cloud security and threat landscape.<\/p>\n
The report stated that looking at Q3 in 2016 versus the same period in 2015, there has been a 71% increase in total DDoS attacks.<\/p>\n
The largest attack of Q3 2016 measured 623Gbps. The biggest attack in Q3 2015 was 149Gbps.<\/p>\n
There was a 77% increase in recorded infrastructure layer (layer 3 and 4) attacks, and a 138% increase in attacks over 100Gbps.<\/p>\n
Total web application attacks decreased by 18% compared to the same period in 2015, while there was a 21% increase in SQLi attacks.<\/p>\n
The United States saw a\u00a067% decrease in attacks sourcing from the country compared to Q3 2015, and a 13% decrease compared to Q2 2016.<\/p>\n
The US, however, is now the top source country for web application attacks.<\/p>\n
Brazil, which was the previous top source country, experienced a\u00a079% decrease in attacks sourcing from it compared to Q2 2016.<\/p>\n
“Without a doubt, the attacks on the site of cybersecurity writer and blogger Brian Krebs (www.krebsonsecurity.com) were the biggest story of the quarter,” said Akamai.<\/p>\n
“The site had been protected pro bono by Akamai\u2019s Prolexic network since July 2012 and found itself on the receiving end of a 623Gbps attack on 20 September 2016.”<\/p>\n
“This was the biggest attack Akamai had ever mitigated to that point.”<\/p>\n
