Digicape, an independent Apple retailer based in Cape Town, has dropped the prices of their Wi-Fi only iPads by R500 and their 3G-enabled iPads by R600, undercutting the recommended retail pricing of the devices charged by other official resellers in South Africa.<\/p>\n

The iPad price cut was announced<\/a> in a tweet earlier this afternoon. According to a Digicape sales consultant this is their new pricing for Apple’s popular tablet and not temporary promotional pricing.<\/p>\n

Last week Apple announced the iPad 2<\/a>, saying that the device will launch in the US on 11 March 2011 at the same price points as the original iPad.<\/p>\n

Though not necessarily related, it is interesting that Digicape cut the prices of their iPads less than a week after Apple announced the iPad 2.<\/p>\n

Among the improvements announced for the iPad 2 is the A5 dual-core system-on-chip (SoC) said to provide up to twice the processing power and nine times the graphics performance of the A4 SoC used in the original iPad.<\/p>\n

The iPad 2 was also announced with rear and front-facing cameras as well as an HDMI output.<\/p>\n

The table below compares Digicape’s pricing to that of the recommended retail pricing suggested by Core Group, as well as the international pricing.<\/p>\n

As indicated by the table, Digicape’s price cut brings local iPad pricing in line with EU prices. As South Africa forms part of the EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) region, this is an expected bracket for local Apple prices to fall under.<\/p>\n

Core Group was asked whether Apple Premium resellers would be reducing their pricing, but didn’t respond by the time of publication.<\/p>\n

Phone calls to South African iStores revealed that they were still selling iPads at the original prices.<\/p>\n
