South African HTC Desire, Desire Z and Desire HD users can look forward to updates to the underlying Android operating system in the next two months, the official local HTC distributor Leaf International Communications revealed.

This comes hot on the heels of the news that HTC confirmed an update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread for these devices in the second quarter of 2011.

Android is a mobile operating system (OS) developed by Google for mobile devices such as smartphones. Version 2.3 of the OS, also called “Gingerbread,” is the latest release for smartphones.

Google’s own Nexus S was the first Android 2.3 Gingerbread device and the Nexus One, its predecessor, recently received an update to the latest Android release for smartphones (2.3.3).

A Gingerbread update for Samsung’s Galaxy S also recently leaked onto the Internet.

It is understood that the updates will be delivered “over-the-air,” meaning users will be able to download them directly to the device over a 3G or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet.

Earlier this year Leaf revealed that all their Android devices will receive updates via firmware over-the-air (FOTA).

According to Leaf they expect to have an upgrade available for the HTC Desire HD by the end of this month. The Desire Z and the original HTC Desire are to receive their updates to the latest release of Google’s mobile operating system in April or May.
