{"id":189900,"date":"2016-12-03T13:00:19","date_gmt":"2016-12-03T11:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=189900"},"modified":"2016-12-03T13:12:19","modified_gmt":"2016-12-03T11:12:19","slug":"dont-believe-the-5g-hype","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/189900-dont-believe-the-5g-hype.html","title":{"rendered":"Don&#8217;t believe the 5G hype"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>5G is punted as the next big thing in connectivity, with super-fast multi-Gbps speeds and low latency for wireless networks the selling points.<\/p>\n<p>A new global research report by UBS, titled \u201cWhere will 5G fall on Hype vs Reality spectrum?\u201d, warns that you should not believe all the hype around the technology.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, 5G today is little more than a vision and will look \u201can awful lot like 4G LTE\u201d using similar or identical techniques to send and receive data.<\/p>\n<p>The UBS report said 5G is facing major challenges, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mobile network innovation remains largely stalled.<\/li>\n<li>The scarcity of optimal low-band spectrum is forcing 5G into the unchartered waters of millimetre wave frequencies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cSo as spectral efficiency remains constrained by the laws of RF physics, the search for capacity with 5G turns to the new frontier of extremely-high millimetre wave (mmW) frequencies &gt;24GHz,\u201d said UBS.<\/p>\n<p>While there is a lot of spectrum available in the extremely-high millimetre wave bands, it comes with drawbacks:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Relatively weak propagation that would require a super-dense network of 5G small cells.<\/li>\n<li>High absorption which turns buildings, hills, even raindrops into 5G&#8217;s mortal enemies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cCost-performance analysis of 5G vs 4G does not look good for the new kid,\u201d said UBS.<\/p>\n<p>Although new developments like software-defined networking and sophisticated antenna technology may help contain 5G&#8217;s proportionate cost, it will not be enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHigh frequencies implying 50-100-times greater cell density combined with the lack of a massive spectral efficiency gain from the technology suggest challenging economics for 5G.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Now read:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/182386-this-video-shows-the-difference-between-4g-and-5g.html\">This video shows the difference between 4G and 5G<\/a><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new research report by UBS warns that 5G is overhyped and you should not believe comments that it will make wired networks redundant.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":23,"featured_media":119592,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_sma_x_autopost_status":"idle","_sma_x_autopost_error":"","_sma_x_post_id":"","_sma_facebook_post_id":"","_sma_instagram_post_id":"","_sma_threads_post_id":"","_sma_x_attempts":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[14],"tags":[19420,35,39994],"class_list":["post-189900","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-cellular","tag-5g","tag-headline","tag-ubs"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/189900"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/23"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=189900"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/189900\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":189960,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/189900\/revisions\/189960"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/119592"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=189900"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=189900"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=189900"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
