The latest smartphone from the makers of Android themselves, the Google Nexus S, has a planned launch date of April 2011, revealed Vodacom spokesperson Nomsa Thusi.<\/p>\n

Vodafone previously announced that the Nexus S would soon be available in Vodafone stores around the world and Vodacom confirmed<\/a> that they would bring the device to South Africa, but couldn’t provide exact dates at the time.<\/p>\n

While HTC manufactured the Google Nexus One, the predecessor to the Nexus S, Samsung builds Google’s latest device.<\/p>\n

Similar to HTC, Samsung also builds its own range of Android devices, including their current flagship smartphone the Samsung Galaxy S.<\/p>\n

The Nexus S and Galaxy S share many characteristics, including their 4-inch WCGA (480×800) Super AMOLED displays, 512MB RAM, processor and graphics unit.<\/p>\n

The biggest difference in hardware between the devices seems to be the lack of microSD card slot in the Nexus S. Without support for expandable storage this means Nexus S users have to be satisfied with the 16GB built-in flash memory.<\/p>\n

Google’s device predictably runs with the newest version of the Android operating system (version 2.3, or Gingerbread), while Samsung’s Galaxy S only recently received an update to Android FroYo<\/a> (version 2.2).<\/p>\n

Another benefit normally attributed to Google’s Nexus devices is that they always seem to receive upgrades for the underlying Android operating system before other manufacturers can release their updates.<\/p>\n

Though Vodacom were able to confirm their plans to bring the Nexus S to South Africa in April 2011, they couldn’t confirm the pricing of the device.<\/p>\n
