Java is still the most popular programming language in the world, according to the Tiobe Index<\/strong><\/a> and the PYPL Index<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

While Java lost market share in both rankings over the past year, it managed to keep its top spot at the start of 2017.<\/p>\n

Part of its popularity can be attributed to its use in Android applications – with the Google OS continuing to dominate the mobile market.<\/p>\n

Java lost 4.19% and 0.9% in the Tiobe and PYPL Indexes respectively, but still maintains a large lead over its competitors – which include C, Python, and C#.<\/p>\n

The table below shows the most popular programming languages in the world, based on the January 2017 Tiobe and PYPL indexes.<\/p>\n

Calculating the rankings<\/h3>\n

PYPL<\/strong> – The more a language tutorial is searched, the more popular the language is assumed to be. The raw data comes from Google Trends.<\/p>\n

Tiobe<\/strong> – The ratings are based on the number of skilled engineers worldwide, courses, and third-party vendors. Popular search engines are also used to calculate the ratings.<\/p>\n
