UHD\/4K TV support is starting to gain traction in the market and DStv is keeping a close eye on international developments as standards for ultra-high-definition\u00a0broadcasting begin to emerge.<\/p>\n
Gerdus van Eeden, CEO for Video Entertainment Technology at Naspers, said that all new technology in the consumer market goes through an adoption cycle or dies.<\/p>\n
\u201c3D started with much hype, pushed by the TV manufacturers in a big way, but it fizzled out and is now all but dead,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Van Eeden does not expect UHD\/4K to go the same way as 3D TVs, which are\u00a0disappearing from store shelves across the world.<\/p>\n
However, until standards are clear and consumers can buy TVs with confidence knowing that, for example, all forms of HDR are supported, the technology will be classed as “emerging”.<\/p>\n
Being an emerging technology, it would be too early for MultiChoice to introduce a UHD\/4K broadcast service.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will keep an eye on international developments as standards for UHD\/4K broadcasting begin to emerge.”<\/p>\n
\u201cBased on these developments, we will decide whether it makes sense to offer this to our customers.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said MultiChoice\u2019s current focus is expanding its HD offering, which they believe offers good-quality viewing to customers.<\/p>\n
\u201cMany South Africans, and DStv customers, still don\u2019t have HD viewing in their homes. This is why we now offer HD on all our packages,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
