{"id":19705,"date":"2011-04-13T16:37:00","date_gmt":"2011-04-13T14:37:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2011-04-13T16:37:00","modified_gmt":"2011-04-13T14:37:00","slug":"icasa-should-sort-out-screamer-says-sentech","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wireless\/19705-icasa-should-sort-out-screamer-says-sentech.html","title":{"rendered":"ICASA should sort out Screamer, says Sentech"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is no secret that Screamer Telecoms has been using Sentech&rsquo;s 2.6GHz spectrum to provide consumers with WiMax and Wi-Fi services.<\/p>\n<p>As early as mid-2009 <a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/Wireless\/8980.html\" target=\"_blank\">media reports surfaced<\/a> that Screamer Telecoms&rsquo; usage of Sentech&rsquo;s spectrum, with Sentech denying that it has any relationship with the company.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Sentech does not have any relationship with Screamer Telecoms.  Sentech is not aware if Screamer Telecoms is using its broadband spectrum, if so it is illegal,&rdquo; said Sentech&rsquo;s Head of Corporate Communications, Polly Modiko said at the time.<\/p>\n<p>One year later the issue made headlines again after former Sentech chairperson Quraysh Patel told parliament that Screamer Telecoms was illegally using their spectrum.<\/p>\n<p>Patel added that he asked the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) to act against Screamer Telecoms if they are still using Sentech&rsquo;s spectrum, highlighting that Sentech discontinued its agreement with Screamer Telecoms in January 2010.<\/p>\n<p>New Sentech chairperson <a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/326455-Logan-Naidoo\">Logan Naidoo<\/a> today reiterated that Screamer Telecoms has no legal right to use Sentech&rsquo;s spectrum, but explained that ICASA is the only organization which can do anything about the situation.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Screamer is operating illegally in terms of legislation,&rdquo; said Naidoo. &ldquo;The matter is currently being litigated upon,&#8221; Naidoo confirmed, but added that &#8220;the ball is now in ICASA&rsquo;s court.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When asked whether heads will roll at the parastatal about the controversial spectrum sub-licensing agreement between Sentech and Screamer Telecoms (or a third party agreement which Screamer Telecoms used), Naidoo said that they would first like to stabilize the company before embarking on any investigation into this matter.<\/p>\n<p>Naidoo however added that they are committed to weeding out corruption and conflicts of interest at Sentech, and that they have recently suspended six people from their procurement department who &lsquo;did not toe the line&rsquo;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/326605-ICASA-should-address-Screamer-spectrum-issue-says-Sentech\"><strong>Sentech and Screamer Telecoms spectrum issue<\/strong><\/a> &lt;&lt; Comments and views<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sentech says Screamer Telecoms is operating illegally and that ICASA is responsible for addressing the issue<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_sma_x_autopost_status":"idle","_sma_x_autopost_error":"","_sma_x_post_id":"","_sma_x_attempts":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[13],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-19705","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-wireless"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/19705"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=19705"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/19705\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=19705"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=19705"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=19705"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
