Is the latest version of Firefox4 – released all of a week or so ago – not cutting edge enough for you? Then you might want to take a look at Aurora.

Aurora is a new developer channel created by Mozilla to give users access to the latest versions of Firefox and was announced recently.

Until now Firefox has had three options for users keen on the browser: Nightly builds (for the seriously experimental), the Beta channel (for pre-releases), and the final consumer-ready channel. Aurora now fits in between the nightly builds and the beta channel and gives users the opportunity to work on very-early pre-releases of Firefox.

Mozilla earlier this year announced plans to speed up the release of new versions of Firefox and has already outlined plans to release version 5, 6 and 7 of Firefox by the end of this year. Part of this planned speed-up is to give users access to early versions of Firefox so that feedback and contributions can be increased and improved.

The Aurora channel will include releases with some of the more experimental features planned for Firefox but will have more polish than the nightly releases: “The Aurora channel is where users can test the latest features and innovations. Users can expect an increase in polish from the raw, cutting edge features in our nightly builds. Aurora releases may not be as stable as beta or final releases.”

The current version of Firefox in the Aurora channel is a version of Firefox5. The final release of Firefox5 is planned for June this year but users can now download Aurora versions of this from the Firefox channels.

Firefox Aurora << Comments and views

Like living on the edge?
