{"id":199488,"date":"2017-02-24T11:00:56","date_gmt":"2017-02-24T09:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=199488"},"modified":"2017-02-24T11:02:12","modified_gmt":"2017-02-24T09:02:12","slug":"all-the-tech-that-caught-on-fire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/gadgets\/199488-all-the-tech-that-caught-on-fire.html","title":{"rendered":"All the tech that caught on fire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The release of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 and its subsequent proclivity for spontaneously erupting into flames caught the attention of smartphone users around the world.<\/p>\n<p>However, this smartphone is not the first tech device to\u00a0have serious problems with heat or explosions.<\/p>\n<p>Below is a\u00a0look at some of the hottest tech which kept bursting into flames.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Samsung Galaxy Note 7<\/h3>\n<p>Samsung&#8217;s Note 7 was eventually recalled due to its &#8220;fire&#8221; problem, which resulted in it being banned on all flights.<\/p>\n<p>The cause of the problem was a fault with the device&#8217;s battery, which was over-sized and incorrectly welded.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/a5W19Spmw8Q\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Ford Kuga<\/h3>\n<p>The Ford Kuga in South Africa is one of the bigger pieces of tech which had problems with catching alight.<\/p>\n<p>The fires turned out to be the result of engine overheating, and Ford launched a safety recall which affected 4,556 local Kuga 1.6-litre models.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mEm_IDoC_kw\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 and 1070<\/h3>\n<p>Graphics cards are hard-working PC components and require efficient cooling.<\/p>\n<p>This is especially true for high-end products like EVGA&#8217;s GeForce GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 cards, which are aimed at hardcore gamers and overclockers.<\/p>\n<p>EVGA <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/computing\/evga-gtx-1080-1070-overheating-issue\/\" target=\"_blank\">reportedly<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>neglected to account for sufficient VRM cooling in its design, and these graphics cards subsequently experienced major overheating issues &#8211; catching fire in certain cases.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WAbl0fLY06U\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Hoverboards<\/h3>\n<p>While popular, certain self-balancing electric scooters experienced serious problems &#8211; resulting in a revision of the product&#8217;s safety standards.<\/p>\n<p>Many users documented their hoverboards bursting into flames or spontaneously exploding.<\/p>\n<p>In certain cases, this resulted in serious property damage and injury.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/z7iNT_Jm71Y\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Laptops<\/h3>\n<p>Malfunctioning lithium-ion batteries are a major cause of\u00a0spontaneous tech fires, and laptops with these batteries are not immune to bursting into flames.<\/p>\n<p>HP recently\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2017\/01\/25\/hp_batteries_from_panasonic_recall\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>recalled<\/strong><\/a> over 100,000 laptop batteries due to their risk of catching fire.
