{"id":199556,"date":"2017-02-26T13:00:38","date_gmt":"2017-02-26T11:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=199556"},"modified":"2017-02-26T13:04:07","modified_gmt":"2017-02-26T11:04:07","slug":"expect-many-more-300gbps-ddos-attacks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/199556-expect-many-more-300gbps-ddos-attacks.html","title":{"rendered":"Expect many more 300Gbps DDoS attacks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Akamai has released its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.akamai.com\/us\/en\/our-thinking\/state-of-the-internet-report\/global-state-of-the-internet-security-ddos-attack-reports.jsp\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Q4 2016 State of the Internet Security Report<\/strong><\/a>, which shows a dramatic increase in the number of DDoS attacks greater than 100Gbps.<\/p>\n<p>The report uses data gathered from the Akamai Intelligent Platform and provides an analysis of the cloud security and threat landscape.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we saw with the Mirai botnet attacks during the third quarter, unsecured Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices continued to drive significant DDoS attack traffic,\u201d said Akamai.<\/p>\n<p>With the predicted exponential proliferation of IoT devices, threat agents will have an expanding pool of resources to carry out attacks.<\/p>\n<p>Highlights from Akamai\u2019s Q4 2016 report relating to DDoS attacks included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Attacks greater than 100Gbps increased 140% year-over-year from Q4 2015.<\/li>\n<li>The largest DDoS attack in Q4 2016 peaked at 517Gbps and came from Spike &#8211; a non-IoT botnet.<\/li>\n<li>Seven of the 12 Q4 2016 attacks greater than 100Gbps can be attributed to Mirai.<\/li>\n<li>The number of IP addresses involved in DDoS attacks grew, despite DDoS attack totals dropping overall.
