Gaming publication Electronic Theatre is reporting that their staff members have received fraudulent e-mails posing as messages from Sony. The messages are coming from an “unknown source” but claim to be from Sony Computer Entertainment.<\/p>\n
The contents of the e-mail are very similar to that issued by Sony last week, explaining the nature of the security breach. However, a link is provided within the e-mail, claiming to lead to a PSN password reset webpage.<\/p>\n
Investigating the hyperlink, Electronic Theatre staff discovered that the webpage to which it leads is clearly fraudulent. Under the premise of restoring PSN access, the webpage will ask users to enter their credit card details. Alarm bells should clearly be going off at this point.<\/p>\n
Electronic Theatre points out that there is no evidence to suggest that these scam e-mails are related to the PSN and SOE hack that saw over 100 million user account details stolen – it could be phishing scammers trying their luck – but the timing is more than a little suspicious.<\/p>\n
Be on the lookout for fraudulent e-mails phishing for your credit card details, and never give out such information. No company will ask users to provide their important financial information via a simple webform. The use of such details will only occur through accredited and secure payment gateways.<\/p>\n
