Telkom announced that it currently has 27 WiMax sites which are fully operational and plans to roll out an additional 71 base stations. <\/p>\n
The company is further planning to launch WiMax-based voice services by March 2008.<\/p>\n
Telkom is however not the only company that is investing in WiMax. <\/p>\n
Vodacom has recently announced that it will launch its WiMax services in early 2008 while Neotel will use WiMax to launch what it calls ‘true broadband services’.<\/p>\n
While Neotel will be using WiMax as its primary broadband technology, Telkom is employing WiMax as an ADSL replacement technology in regions where ADSL is not available.<\/p>\n
MWEB, Internet Solutions and various other providers also have active WiMax test networks, but they must wait for ICASA to allocate them spectrum before they launch commercial services.<\/p>\n
