Last week MWEB announced<\/a> that it would provide 500 of its subscribers with 6 months of free access to WTFast,  an application that allows MMO gamers to connect to international servers at lower latencies. <\/p>\n

As great as the offer is, it did raise a few questions from with the local gaming community. Questions which we put forward to MWEB’s newly appointed gaming manager, Desmond Kurz.<\/p>\n

We started off asking Kurz if instead of setting gamers up with WTFast, why doesn’t MWEB pursue hosting a local World of Warcraft server? <\/p>\n

“It goes without saying that it would be better to have a WOW server in South Africa as it would be for all MMO’s and other online games that our customers play internationally.” said Kurz, elaborating: “Much like we have done with Call of Duty: Black Ops, we do engage the international publishers to take notice of the South African market and lobby them to provide the best solution for SA Gamers, which will also include looking at hosting opportunities for these games.”<\/p>\n

We also asked Kurz whether instead of providing gamers with WTFast, MWEB could simply unshape the ports used to access international gaming servers, or set up its own low latency network that connects directly to international servers. <\/p>\n

“Regarding the WTFast solution and the alternative solutions that you refer to in your questions, we believe that this product offers a simple and very effective solution to some of the problems typically encountered by gamers accessing servers hosted internationally,” said Kurz.<\/p>\n

Finally, we asked Kurz what would happen to the WTFast accounts once the six month free period expires. “MWEB will continue to run the offer over the next few month and then, based on performance and take-up, we will make a decision as to continuing with the product as a free or paid service, but as always we will have the customer as top-of-mind.”<\/p>\n
