{"id":206008,"date":"2017-04-06T17:11:47","date_gmt":"2017-04-06T15:11:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=206008"},"modified":"2017-04-06T17:15:20","modified_gmt":"2017-04-06T15:15:20","slug":"ubuntu-is-switching-back-to-gnome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/software\/206008-ubuntu-is-switching-back-to-gnome.html","title":{"rendered":"Ubuntu is switching back to GNOME"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mark Shuttleworth <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insights.ubuntu.com\/2017\/04\/05\/growing-ubuntu-for-cloud-and-iot-rather-than-phone-and-convergence\/\" target=\"_blank\">has announced<\/a><\/strong> that Canonical\u00a0will end its investment in the Unity8 desktop for Ubuntu.<\/p>\n<p>From the 18.04 long-term support version of the OS, due in April 2018, Ubuntu will switch back to the GNOME desktop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d like to emphasise our ongoing passion for, investment in, and commitment to the Ubuntu desktop,\u201d said Shuttleworth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will continue to produce the most usable open source desktop in the world, to maintain the existing LTS releases, to work with our commercial partners, to support our corporate customers, and to delight the millions of IoT and cloud developers who innovate on top of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shuttleworth added\u00a0that Canonical is abandoning its investment in Ubuntu for phones and TVs &#8211; the \u201cphone and convergence shell\u201d.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Abandoning phones and Unity8<\/h3>\n<p>Shuttleworth\u00a0said\u00a0he was passionate about convergence, and engaged with the people and the product, making the decision difficult.<\/p>\n<p>The choice was shaped by commercial constraints and he chose to invest in the areas which are contributing to Canonical\u2019s growth.<\/p>\n<p>Shuttleworth said his assumptions about delivering free software alternatives for converged computing were proven wrong.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the community, our efforts were seen as fragmentation, not innovation.
