and it is utter nonsense"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>US network operator AT&amp;T has announced the launch of \u201c5G Evolution\u201d in Texas, with plans to launch in 20 metros by the end of 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Its use of the 5G term in marketing material has been heavily criticised by <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2017\/4\/25\/15425414\/att-5g-evolution-network-lte-advanced-misleading-marketing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Verge<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.androidpolice.com\/2017\/04\/25\/att-is-the-first-carrier-to-say-it-has-a-5g-network-which-is-complete-bullshit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Android Police<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/gizmodo.com\/at-t-launches-fake-5g-network-in-desperate-attempt-to-s-1794645881\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gizmodo<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; with Android Police calling it &#8220;complete bullshit&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>AT&amp;T defended its use of the term 5G in a press release, stating: \u201cWe continue to lay the foundation for our evolution to 5G while the 5G standards are being finalised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, Android Police and Gizmodo remained unconvinced.<\/p>\n<p>According to AT&amp;T, it\u2019s \u201cevolution to 5G\u201d includes upgrades like carrier aggregation, 4&#215;4 MIMO, and 256 QAM.<\/p>\n<p>This is complete nonsense.<\/p>\n<p>As highlighted by multiple reports, all of the upgrades mentioned above are included in the LTE-Advanced specification, which the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and the 3GPP have approved as a 4G technology.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, other operators have already implemented the upgrades to their networks, which, at worst, are being marketed as \u201c4G+\u201d.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">No 5G standard<\/h3>\n<p>The main reason AT&amp;T\u2019s claims are being criticised, though, is that <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/178015-5g-means-20gbps-mobile-data-speeds.html\"><strong>no standards<\/strong><\/a> have been evaluated as qualifying as 5G.<\/p>\n<p>The standard defining 5G is only expected to be authorised in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>A workshop will likely be held later this year to complete technical performance specifications, determine an evaluation method and criteria, and design a format of submission.<\/p>\n<p>Potential standards may then be submitted with a deadline, expected to be set for mid-2019.<\/p>\n<p>Once the deadline has passed, standards will be evaluated and those that succeed will be known as IMT-2020, or 5G.<\/p>\n<p>For 5G, the requirements are predicted to\u00a0be as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Spectrum Efficiency is required to be 3-times better than IMT-Advanced.<\/li>\n<li>The peak data rate must be better by a factor of 20.<\/li>\n<li>Area Traffic Capacity must be 100-times better than IMT-Advanced.<\/li>\n<li>The standard must work while travelling at 500km\/h, to be applicable for magnetic levitation trains.<\/li>\n<li>Network Energy Efficiency must be 100-times better.<\/li>\n<li>Latency must be 1 millisecond.<\/li>\n<li>Connection density must be 1 million connections per square kilometre.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Now read: <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/189900-dont-believe-the-5g-hype.html\">Don\u2019t believe the 5G hype<\/a><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We\u2019ve said it before and we\u2019ll say it again &#8211;
