{"id":210780,"date":"2017-05-15T14:29:38","date_gmt":"2017-05-15T12:29:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=210780"},"modified":"2017-05-15T14:30:58","modified_gmt":"2017-05-15T12:30:58","slug":"crackdown-on-internet-tech-support-scams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/210780-crackdown-on-internet-tech-support-scams.html","title":{"rendered":"Crackdown on Internet tech support scams"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Federal Trade Commission in the US has launched a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/news-events\/press-releases\/2017\/05\/ftc-federal-state-international-partners-announce-major-crackdown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>legal campaign<\/strong><\/a> aimed at taking down online &#8220;tech support&#8221; fraud.<\/p>\n<p>Operation Tech Trap will tackle the scammers\u00a0behind the online pop-ups and phone calls used to trick users into using falling for &#8220;tech support help&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The operation has laid charges against seven people, two of whom have pleaded guilty.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Tech support scams prey on consumers\u2019 legitimate concerns about malware, viruses, and other cyber threats.
