{"id":210944,"date":"2017-05-16T17:23:43","date_gmt":"2017-05-16T15:23:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=210944"},"modified":"2017-05-16T17:23:43","modified_gmt":"2017-05-16T15:23:43","slug":"mp3-is-not-dead-its-been-set-free","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/software\/210944-mp3-is-not-dead-its-been-set-free.html","title":{"rendered":"MP3 is not dead, it&#8217;s been set free"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reports that the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/software\/210562-mp3-is-dead.html\">MP3 is dead<\/a><\/strong> have missed the real story, according to software developer <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/marco.org\/2017\/05\/15\/mp3-isnt-dead\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marco Arment<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the\u00a0announcement by the Fraunhofer IIS, you may think the MP3 file format has been written off and that everyone\u00a0should move to AAC, said Arment.<\/p>\n<p>However, what has really\u00a0happened is\u00a0that\u00a0the last MP3 patents have expired.<\/p>\n<p>Fraunhofer&#8217;s announcement was about\u00a0ending its\u00a0patent-licensing programme, and advocating that everyone\u00a0moves to AAC, a newer format that it argues is better and is\u00a0still patented.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;MP3 is supported by everything, everywhere, and is now patent-free,&#8221; said Arment.
