{"id":213770,"date":"2017-06-12T08:59:21","date_gmt":"2017-06-12T06:59:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=213770"},"modified":"2017-06-12T09:00:48","modified_gmt":"2017-06-12T07:00:48","slug":"telkom-subscriber-asks-why-her-data-bill-was-high-has-chat-cut-off","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/213770-telkom-subscriber-asks-why-her-data-bill-was-high-has-chat-cut-off.html","title":{"rendered":"Telkom subscriber asks why her data bill was high, has chat cut off"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Telkom recently slapped a data subscriber with a bill for R1,820.95, much higher than the R399 she was expecting.<\/p>\n<p>The higher-than-normal\u00a0charge\u00a0was for data usage fees over the standard 20GB her contract provides.<\/p>\n<p>This is unusual for Telkom\u2019s mobile services, as the network not only lets subscribers <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/205546-i-forgot-to-disable-data-roaming-in-new-york-and-telkom-saved-my-ass.html\"><strong>set spend limits<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0on a contract, but cuts you off when you reach the limit of your data bundle.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of billing you out of bundle, it redirects you to your portal and\u00a0asks whether you wish to load a new data bundle or continue out of bundle.<\/p>\n<p>In her complaint to Telkom, the client said the bill was completely unexpected, as she has been cut off before after reaching her cap.<\/p>\n<p>However, in March 2017, the system failed and allowed her to go beyond her 20GB without any notification.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Poor service<\/h3>\n<p>Initial attempts by the customer to get the charges investigated and reversed were met with unhelpful Telkom support staff.<\/p>\n<p>They claimed the contract did not have a R0 spend limit as she\u00a0suggested, but a R500 limit.<\/p>\n<p>When she asked how her OOB bill went to over R1,400 when the limit was supposed to be R500, Telkom support ended their chat.<\/p>\n<p>When similar questions were asked over email, no response was received.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Refunded<\/h3>\n<p>After MyBroadband contacted Telkom, the case was investigated and the client credited the R1,421.95.<\/p>\n<p>Telkom offered to refund the amount to her bank account, but she had already closed her account and opened a new one &#8211; fearing that she would be\u00a0hit with another big debit order the following month.<\/p>\n<p>The company said its investigation revealed that the client\u2019s limit was not altered.<\/p>\n<p>A software glitch in the system\u00a0resulted in her not being redirected\u00a0after reaching her cap.
