{"id":217012,"date":"2017-06-26T12:20:52","date_gmt":"2017-06-26T10:20:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=217012"},"modified":"2017-06-26T12:22:00","modified_gmt":"2017-06-26T10:22:00","slug":"the-bug-zapping-laser","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/gadgets\/217012-the-bug-zapping-laser.html","title":{"rendered":"The bug-zapping laser"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An American company is looking to take on unwanted bugs with what it calls the\u00a0Photonic Fence.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.intellectualventureslab.com\/work\/photonic-fence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Intellectual Ventures Lab<\/strong><\/a> has been working on the device since 2009, according to a report by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.co.uk\/article\/intellectual-ventures-bug-zapper\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Wired<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The device is currently undergoing its first real-world test with the\u00a0US Department of Agriculture, and will be sold to farmers if it works as intended.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Photonic Fence uses cameras and other optic devices to scan for bugs within 100m, analysing a target&#8217;s form, velocity, and wing beat to recognise which creature it is.<\/p>\n<p>Certain pests can be placed on a &#8220;kill list&#8221;, and when identified will be shot with a laser.
