One of the ‘SABC 8’ journalists Suna Venter has died. She was 32.<\/p>\n
“It is true,” her colleague Foeta Krige told News24 over the phone on Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n
Her family said in a statement that she had recently been diagnosed with a cardiac condition known as stress cardiomyopathy, or Broken Heart Syndrome, which was believed to be caused by trauma and prolonged periods of unnatural stress.<\/p>\n
Venter was shot in the face with a pellet gun at the beginning of the year, after coming out of a restaurant in Linden, Johannesburg, while buying take-away food.<\/p>\n
She escaped major injury.<\/p>\n
“Those closest to her believe that her condition was exacerbated, if not caused, by the events of the past year,” the statement read.<\/p>\n
Venter was part of a group of eight SABC journalists who were fired, and seven later reinstated, for objecting to former COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng\u2019s policy of no longer airing footage of violent protests.<\/p>\n
