{"id":226443,"date":"2017-08-30T12:56:01","date_gmt":"2017-08-30T10:56:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=226443"},"modified":"2017-08-30T12:57:17","modified_gmt":"2017-08-30T10:57:17","slug":"iburst-shutting-down-tomorrow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wireless\/226443-iburst-shutting-down-tomorrow.html","title":{"rendered":"iBurst shutting down tomorrow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/196024-iburst-decommissioning-its-network.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>an announcement<\/strong><\/a> in January that iBurst was implementing plans to decommission its network, the day has come for it to shut down.<\/p>\n<p>The shutting down of the iBurst network follows the acquisition of\u00a0iBurst parent WBS by Multisource in 2015, and its subsequent launch of the <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wireless\/223620-rain-lte-a-tested-30mbps-with-low-latency.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Rain LTE-A network<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The company said the iBurst network will <a href=\"https:\/\/lte.iburst.co.za\/iburst-cancellation-notice\/?platform=hootsuite\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>officially shut down<\/strong><\/a> on\u00a031 August.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The network will not function from this date onwards and our respective obligations in terms of the Subscriber Terms and Conditions shall cease,&#8221; said the company.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Your iBurst modem will not receive a connection. We do not require your iBurst modem to be returned to us and you are free to dispose of this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Any unused data and value-added services from iBurst will be cancelled, it said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Technology obsolescence&#8221; is the driving force behind the shutdown, as the tech used in the iBurst network is &#8220;no longer viable technically or commercially&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>iBurst ran LTE-A <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/196596-iburst-switching-to-lte-advanced-the-details.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>migration specials<\/strong><\/a> for customers who wanted to move to the Rain network following the decommissioning announcement.<\/p>\n<p>Rain LTE-A packages are available from several local ISPs, and promise speeds of between 10Mbps and 50Mbps.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Going forward<\/h3>\n<p>For iBurst subscribers who are still on the network, they have one of two choices:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Take no action, and their contract will terminate.<\/li>\n<li>Migrate to the LTE-A service.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For subscribers who wish to <a href=\"https:\/\/lte.iburst.co.za\/how-to-migrate-from-iburst-to-lte-a\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>migrate to LTE-A<\/strong><\/a>, they can use a partial self-service option, or an assisted sign-up option.<\/p>\n<p>The self-service option requires a customer to sign up online and submit supporting documents &#8211; copy of ID, proof of address, and iBurst account number.<\/p>\n<p>Users who require assistance in signing up can call the\u00a0LTE migration team on 087 720 20 20, or complete a call back request form.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Now read:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wireless\/224004-wi-fi-speeds-in-south-africa-iphone-vs-android.html\" rel=\"bookmark\">Wi-Fi speeds in South Africa \u2013 iPhone vs Android<\/a><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The network will officially shut down on\u00a031 August.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":23,"featured_media":131266,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[13],"tags":[35,683],"class_list":["post-226443","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-wireless","tag-headline","tag-iburst"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/226443"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/23"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=226443"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/226443\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":226737,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/226443\/revisions\/226737"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/131266"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=226443"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=226443"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=226443"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
