{"id":226461,"date":"2017-08-31T08:58:57","date_gmt":"2017-08-31T06:58:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=226461"},"modified":"2017-08-31T09:00:59","modified_gmt":"2017-08-31T07:00:59","slug":"rip-iburst","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadband\/226461-rip-iburst.html","title":{"rendered":"RIP iBurst"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Multisource will shut down the iBurst Wireless service on 31 August, ending a 12-year broadband journey.<\/p>\n<p>The company informed iBurst subscribers that their modem will no longer receive a signal after the shutdown.<\/p>\n<p>iBurst has provided South Africans with cost-effective broadband services for over a decade, and was one of the first wireless broadband providers in the country.<\/p>\n<p>However, due to technology obsolescence it is no longer viable technically or commercially to run the network.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">iBurst technology<\/h3>\n<p>When iBurst unveiled its 1Mbps wireless broadband products in 2004, they were the fastest broadband services in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>The service used IEEE 802.20 or Mobile Broadband Wireless Access (MBWA) technology, which was developed by ArrayComm and optimised the use of bandwidth with the help of smart antennas.<\/p>\n<p>Kyocera was the manufacturer of iBurst devices, and supplied South Africa with iBurst desktop modems.<\/p>\n<p>The technology never achieved large-scale mainstream adoption, however, and stopped being actively developed.<\/p>\n<p>While South African iBurst users could receive speeds of up to 2Mbps, the technology fell behind HSPA, LTE, and LTE-A.<\/p>\n<p>With Rain rolling out an LTE-A network, there was no reason to keep the legacy iBurst network active.<\/p>\n<p>Existing iBurst subscribers were moved to the Rain LTE-A network or given the option of letting their contract terminate.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">History of iBurst<\/h3>\n<p>iBurst unveiled its first wireless broadband products in 2004, and the iBurst Service Provider Company launched on 1 May 2005.<\/p>\n<p>At launch, the company&#8217;s goal was to &#8220;offer the speed of DSL in a mobile environment&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Thanks to frequency interference reduction, users obtain stable speeds that are faster than other mobile Internet offerings,\u201d said iBurst.<\/p>\n<p>A look at the company&#8217;s history, from its initial product announcement to its network shutdown, is detailed below.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">August 2004<\/h3>\n<p><strong>iBurst opens its network to testers, including <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/15308-Becoming-an-iburst-tester\">well-known tech execs<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/iBurst-Modem.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-226511\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/iBurst-Modem.jpg\" alt=\"iBurst-Modem\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/iBurst-Modem.jpg 640w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/iBurst-Modem-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">December 2004<\/h3>\n<p><strong>The 1Mbps service is soft-launched in South Africa, <a href=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/stories\/200412020107.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">demonstrating<\/a> \u201chigh-speed Internet services\u201d in Sandton City.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/iBurst.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-226513\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/iBurst.jpg\" alt=\"iBurst\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/iBurst.jpg 640w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/iBurst-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">April 2005<\/h3>\n<p><strong>iBurst officially launches its 1Mbps broadband service, <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/18758-Prices-are-out\">with four packages<\/a> &#8211;
