{"id":227921,"date":"2017-09-05T21:52:07","date_gmt":"2017-09-05T19:52:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=227921"},"modified":"2017-09-05T21:53:55","modified_gmt":"2017-09-05T19:53:55","slug":"anc-gets-its-way-with-sabc-board","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/227921-anc-gets-its-way-with-sabc-board.html","title":{"rendered":"ANC gets its way with SABC board"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The ANC played hardball when it came to candidates for the SABC board with ANC connections.<\/p>\n<p>Initially, the portfolio committee on communications, who were deliberating on which 12 out of 34 candidates to select for the SABC board on Tuesday morning reached consensus on 6 candidates \u2013 Michael Markovitz, Khanyisile Kweyama, Mathatha Tsedu, Nomvuyiso Batyi, Rachel Kalidass, Victor Rambau.<\/p>\n<p>After the committee agreed on these names, the DA and EFF, however, objected to the inclusion of current interim board members Krish Naidoo and Febe Potgieter-Gqubule based on their affiliation to the ANC.<\/p>\n<p>EFF MP Mbuyiseni Ndlozi said Potgieter-Gqubule \u201cfailed dismally to understand the times and epoch SABC is entering\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe thinks it is correct being an ANC deployee into the board,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He mentioned that she indicated that she would resign from the SABC board if she is elected to the ANC\u2019s NEC in December.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s a politician, she\u2019s an outright politician.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Naidoo\u2019s interview also left Ndlozi unsatisfied. According to Ndlozi he \u201cwent to ask for permission, and said the people in Luthuli House said he should come and see how he can help\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>ANC MP Mondli Gungubele said both Naidoo and Potgieter-Gqubule are not only academically qualified, but have also served society in many instances.<\/p>\n<p>He said both of them served on the interim board and there wasn\u2019t any negative heard about them. He also said that Naidoo spoke out while serving on the previous board.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">\u2018Unfortunate\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;As the ANC, one of the things that are critical, we envisage in the future a mature democracy where South Africanness will prevail above political affiliation,\u201d said Gungubele<\/p>\n<p>He said Naidoo and Potgieter-Gqubule served \u201cbeyond partisanship\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Thereafter the committee reached consensus on a further two candidates \u2013 John Matisonn and Jack Phalane \u2013 leaving four candidates to be selected.<\/p>\n<p>Again the DA and EFF raised their objections to Naidoo and Potgieter-Gqubule, with the ANC equally resolute to include them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not going to change on those names,\u201d said ANC MP Lerumo Kalako. \u201cYou are not going to persuade us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not going to happen, they (the DA and EFF) must forget.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFebe is an independent woman, why reduce her to a puppet?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kalako suggested the committee puts it to a vote.<\/p>\n<p>Nokuzola Tolashe said there is nothing wrong with belonging to the ANC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must appreciate that the ANC came and salvaged the country,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>DA MP Gavin Davis said obviously the ANC wants to put it to a vote, as it is in their interest because they want to use their majority.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is very unfortunate.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Allegations<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThe key problem at the SABC was cadre deployment by ANC,\u201d he said as chairperson Humphrey Maxegwana interrupted him.<\/p>\n<p>Davis said he would like to acknowledge the ANC\u2019s choice and register the DA\u2019s objection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe oppose the deployment of political operatives at SABC,\u201d said Davis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe accept the ANC wants to impose the will of the majority on us because that is the way the ANC operates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Much toing and froing ensued, with the ANC rejecting the DA\u2019s remaining four candidates and the DA rejecting the ANC\u2019s last two candidates, which included Dinkanyane Mohuba, dean of students at the University of Limpopo.<\/p>\n<p>During his interview, he was quizzed on his ties with former ANC premier of Limpopo, Cassel Mothale. He said he has no business interests with Mothale, except that they stay in the same suburb in Polokwane.<\/p>\n<p>He was also asked about allegations that he awarded illegal contracts to members of the ANC Youth League, which he described as &#8220;malicious fabrications\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The ANC\u2019s other candidate is Bongumusa Makhathini.<\/p>\n<p>ANC MP Moses Tseli said \u201cThe impression being created that the ANC is imposing a list is wrong.
