MTN has implemented plans to assist in the fight against rhino poaching, using its Connected Wildlife Solution.<\/p>\n
The Connected Wildlife Solution is operational at Welgevonden Game Reserve and provides insight into animal behaviour and conservation, said MTN.<\/p>\n
The project has provided a vast amount of data regarding danger signals and rhino behaviour, which can be used to combat poaching.<\/p>\n
By using sensors on the animals, rangers can determine danger levels in advance and organise response teams to save the animals from attackers.<\/p>\n
The IoT network solution uses identifiers – which can be linked to any object – to transfer data over a network.<\/p>\n
In the current project, the identifiers are sensor collars placed on four different species of prey animals that roam the Welgevonden Game Reserve with the rhinos.<\/p>\n
The data collected from the sensors is communicated via a wide area network server and backhauled over the MTN 3G\/4G network.<\/p>\n
“We want to give the next generation a chance to actually see a rhino and not just learn about how they became extinct and how little was done to stop that,\u201d said MTN Business General Manager for ICT Solutions Mariana Kruger.<\/p>\n
