In recent months, DStv has focused on reducing the number of repeats<\/strong><\/a> across its channels, said MultiChoice SA CEO Mark Rayner.<\/p>\n

This has included the cancellation of\u00a0channels which\u00a0mainly broadcast repeated content.<\/p>\n

The first of these cancellations saw\u00a0CBS Action and CBS Drama going off air on 10 October 2016.<\/p>\n

While certain channels were cancelled, others were merged – such as M-Net Edge into the main M-Net channel.<\/p>\n

M-Net in particular announced several changes earlier this year in an effort to have zero repeats during prime-time<\/strong><\/a> viewing hours.<\/p>\n

M-Net said even when there are production breaks in shows screened during prime time, it will not schedule repeats in that time slot.<\/p>\n

Rayner said the reduction of repeats increased M-Net\u2019s ratings.<\/p>\n

MultiChoice previously stated that to compensate for channels subscribers on cheaper packages lose, more DStv channels are being made available to them.<\/p>\n

Third-party channels<\/h3>\n

The company has also tackled third-party channels which repeat content too often – even if it rates well.<\/p>\n

\u201cI pity the channels that get a call from Aletta [Alberts] and her content team,\u201d said Rayner.<\/p>\n

Alberts, head of content at MultiChoice, has argued vehemently with the BBC over repeats of old Top Gear episodes in particular.<\/p>\n

The channel would often show multiple back-to-back episodes of older seasons.<\/p>\n

Such discussions are ongoing with channels and reducing repeats continues to be a huge focus for DStv, said Rayner.<\/p>\n
