{"id":230997,"date":"2017-09-28T18:21:52","date_gmt":"2017-09-28T16:21:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=230997"},"modified":"2017-09-28T18:23:57","modified_gmt":"2017-09-28T16:23:57","slug":"android-unlock-patterns-are-easy-to-copy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/230997-android-unlock-patterns-are-easy-to-copy.html","title":{"rendered":"Android unlock patterns are easy to copy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Android devices offer a &#8220;pattern unlock&#8221; feature as a security measure, but it may not be as safe as users think.<\/p>\n<p>A study from the US\u00a0Naval Academy found it is easy to &#8220;shoulder surf&#8221; and remember a user&#8217;s unlock pattern.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nakedsecurity.sophos.com\/2017\/09\/28\/android-unlock-patterns-are-too-easy-to-guess-stop-using-them\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sophos reported<\/a><\/strong> that researchers conducted a large-scale study which involved participants watching videos of users inputting PINs and unlock patterns.<\/p>\n<p>They then asked them to replicate what they saw.<\/p>\n<p>PINs (six digits) were tough for most users, and only 10% were able to reproduce codes in a video. About 25% were able to remember a PIN with\u00a0multiple viewings.<\/p>\n<p>Unlock patterns that used six nodes, however, were remembered by 64% of participants after one viewing.
