MTN will continue to invest heavily in its network to ensure it can provide subscribers with a high-quality experience, MTN SA CEO Godfrey Motsa told MyBroadband.<\/p>\n

Motsa said the company\u2019s network capital expenditure has been around R10 billion per year since 2015.<\/p>\n

The government could help decrease the expenditure numbers, which will in turn reduce data prices, by releasing additional wireless frequency capacity, said Motsa.<\/p>\n

If the government and ICASA cannot provide mobile operators with additional spectrum, however, MTN will keep building its network to meet customer demand.<\/p>\n

Chief technology and information officer for MTN South Africa, Giovanni Chiarelli, said their plan is to cover 98% of South Africa\u2019s population with 3G, and 73% with LTE by the end of the year.<\/p>\n

Chiarelli said that by the end of 2017, they expect to have more 3G sites than 2G sites for the first time – while dramatically increasing the number of LTE-capable sites in the country.<\/p>\n

MTN expects to have 10,954 2G sites, 11,150 3G sites, and 7,920 LTE sites online by the end of December.<\/p>\n
