{"id":240750,"date":"2017-12-05T07:29:03","date_gmt":"2017-12-05T05:29:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=240750"},"modified":"2017-12-05T07:32:06","modified_gmt":"2017-12-05T05:32:06","slug":"cloudflare-ceo-fighting-for-free-speech","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/internet\/240750-cloudflare-ceo-fighting-for-free-speech.html","title":{"rendered":"Cloudflare CEO fighting for free speech"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In August,\u00a0Cloudflare <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.cloudflare.com\/why-we-terminated-daily-stormer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>terminated the account<\/strong><\/a> of the Daily Stormer, a right-wing neo-Nazi site.<\/p>\n<p>This is a decision CEO Matthew Prince now regrets.<\/p>\n<p>Cloudflare stopped proxying Daily Stormer\u2019s traffic and stopped answering DNS requests for its sites, and said it reserved the right\u00a0to terminate users of their network at their sole discretion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe tipping point for us making this decision was that the team behind Daily Stormer made the claim that we were secretly supporters of their ideology,\u201d said Cloudflare.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2017\/12\/cloudflares-ceo-has-a-plan-to-never-censor-hate-speech-again\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Prince said<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0he hated the decision, and he hopes to never repeat it again.<\/p>\n<p>The CEO &#8211; an \u201calmost free-speech absolutist\u201d &#8211; said they did not have much choice at the time.<\/p>\n<p>They faced pressure from clients, with threats they will cancel their services unless Cloudflare took action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe reached out to various civil libertarian organisations and said we need some air cover here.
