Marks for the matric class of 2017 in maths, maths literacy, physical science, and life sciences did not require adjustment this year, the Sunday Times reported.<\/p>\n
Umalusi, the quality assurance body for the exams, said that there was a steady upward trend in maths and science marks.<\/p>\n
The body aims to standardise matric results across years and subjects. This year it increased the marks of sixteen subjects<\/a><\/strong> and adjusted the marks of four subjects downward. The results of 38 subjects remained unchanged.<\/p>\n Last year Umalusi did not change the marks for physical science, but adjusted the results of the matric exams for maths, maths literacy, and life sciences upwards. Following last year’s adjustment, 51.1% of the 2016 matric class passed maths, 71.3% passed maths literacy, and 70.5% life science. Physical science, which was not adjusted, had a pass rate of 62%.<\/p>\n Umalusi said that when marks are adjusted it doesn’t simply implement a blanket increase or decrease for all pupils. In some cases, learners’ marks may be adjusted up or down within the same subject.<\/p>\n This year, 803,636 pupils registered to write the matric exams, of which 634,527 were full-time, while 168,109 were part-time candidates.
