{"id":246004,"date":"2018-01-27T08:01:55","date_gmt":"2018-01-27T06:01:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=246004"},"modified":"2018-01-27T08:02:38","modified_gmt":"2018-01-27T06:02:38","slug":"work-is-your-most-important-programming-qualification","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/software\/246004-work-is-your-most-important-programming-qualification.html","title":{"rendered":"Work is your most important programming qualification"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>HackerRank recently published the results of its annual developer survey, the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/research.hackerrank.com\/developer-skills\/2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2018 Developer Skills Report<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The report found that employers care more about a programmer\u2019s published code than their education, and that that ability to solve problems was an important attribute.<\/p>\n<p>The study aimed to identify trends in developer education, skills, and hiring practices, and involved\u00a039,441 professional and student developers completing an online survey between 16 October and 1 November.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Show what you can do<\/h3>\n<p>According to the report, employers care more about the experience and portfolio of a developer than where they went to university.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat you do matters more than anything else,\u201d stated the report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn overwhelming majority of hiring managers said they look for proven skill, such as previous work, years of experience, and projects [or GitHub portfolio].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of company size, 90% of hiring managers said that previous experience and years of experience are indicators of skill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSmall companies place a higher value on the portfolio &#8211;
