{"id":246635,"date":"2018-01-29T07:57:38","date_gmt":"2018-01-29T05:57:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=246635"},"modified":"2018-01-29T08:00:53","modified_gmt":"2018-01-29T06:00:53","slug":"linux-4-15-released","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/software\/246635-linux-4-15-released.html","title":{"rendered":"Linux 4.15 released"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Linux creator Linus Torvalds has released version 4.15 of the Linux kernel.<\/p>\n<p>The release <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/software\/245606-linux-kernel-4-15-delayed.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>was recently delayed<\/strong><\/a> due to the disclosure of speculative execution vulnerabilities affecting many processors.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This obviously was not a pleasant\u00a0release cycle, with the whole meltdown\/spectre thing coming in in the\u00a0middle of the cycle. The extra two weeks were obviously mainly due to that whole\u00a0timing issue,&#8221; said\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/lkml.iu.edu\/hypermail\/linux\/kernel\/1801.3\/02794.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Torvalds<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Torvalds added that the release of Linux 4.15 does not mean developers are finished dealing with the vulnerabilities.<\/p>\n<p>There is more work to be done on patches for ARM-based processors. Torvalds also stated that programmers need the kernel updates and a compiler with support for the &#8220;retpoline&#8221; indirect brand model to enjoy full mitigation support.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The bulk of the 4.15 work is all\u00a0the regular plodding boring stuff.
