{"id":247071,"date":"2018-01-31T16:28:07","date_gmt":"2018-01-31T14:28:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=247071"},"modified":"2018-01-31T16:29:59","modified_gmt":"2018-01-31T14:29:59","slug":"the-mistakes-multichoice-made-with-ann7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/247071-the-mistakes-multichoice-made-with-ann7.html","title":{"rendered":"The mistakes MultiChoice made with ANN7"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MultiChoice has revealed the key findings of its Audit and Risk Committee investigation into the channel agreement deal with ANN7, highlighting the mistakes it made.<\/p>\n<p>It also investigated concerns over lobbying former Minister of Communications Faith Muthambi to assume responsibility over all broadcasting matters in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>While the committee highlighted several procedural mistakes, it reported there was no evidence of corruption or illegal activity.<\/p>\n<p>The mistakes it found were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No comprehensive due diligence of channel ownership was performed on ANN7.<\/li>\n<li>There are no corporate guidelines for lobbying.<\/li>\n<li>MultiChoice did not react quickly enough when concerns were raised over the ownership of ANN7.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As a result of the committee\u2019s findings, MultiChoice will institute stricter due diligence procedures for all new start-up channels, and develop a policy on lobbying.<\/p>\n<p>Measures have also been put in place so that concerns are escalated to its board sooner, said MultiChoice.<\/p>\n<p>MultiChoice also announced it will <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/247065-dstv-dropping-ann7.html\"><strong>not renew its contract with ANN7<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0this year.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">ANN7<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cConcerns about MultiChoice\u2019s relationship with ANN7 and questions about how it lobbied government were raised in the media in November 2017,\u201d said MultiChoice.<\/p>\n<p>As a result of the reports, the MultiChoice Audit and Risk Committee assessed the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Whether appropriate procedures were followed in relation to the ANN7 contract.<\/li>\n<li>The payments made by MultiChoice to ANN7.<\/li>\n<li>Whether there were irregularities in the submissions MultiChoice made to the\u00a0Minister of Communications.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The committee found that the commercial terms of the ANN7 contract are within acceptable parameters associated with the establishment of a news channel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn addition, the R25-million upfront payment to ANN7 made on 15 September 2015 was neither abnormal nor unusual,\u201d said MultiChoice.<\/p>\n<p>It said other channels previously received upfront payments as part of the channel negotiations, including the SABC.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Imtiaz Patel<\/h3>\n<p>The committee also commented on allegations concerning Imtiaz Patel\u2019s -MultiChoice CEO at the time &#8211;
