{"id":247628,"date":"2018-02-06T08:34:51","date_gmt":"2018-02-06T06:34:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=247628"},"modified":"2018-02-06T08:36:24","modified_gmt":"2018-02-06T06:36:24","slug":"spacex-falcon-heavy-set-for-launch-tonight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/science\/247628-spacex-falcon-heavy-set-for-launch-tonight.html","title":{"rendered":"SpaceX Falcon Heavy set for launch tonight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SpaceX has received its launch licence for the test of its Falcon Heavy rocket, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/spaceflightnow.com\/2018\/02\/04\/spacex-receives-commercial-launch-license-for-first-falcon-heavy-flight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spaceflight Now reported<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>A 2.5-hour window for the launch will open at 20:30 South Africa time, and close at 23:00.<\/p>\n<p>SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said the launch is currently scheduled for 20:30.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/science\/246034-spacex-static-fires-falcon-heavy-rocket.html\">SpaceX conducted a static\u00a0test fire<\/a><\/strong> of all 27 Merlin engines on the Falcon Heavy launch vehicle at the end of January.<\/p>\n<p>The engines are split between three Falcon 9 boosters and generate thrust equal to about 18 Boeing 747 aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly the Saturn V moon rocket, last flown in 1973, delivered more payload to orbit,\u201d said SpaceX.<\/p>\n<p>Musk said he does not expect the first launch of the Falcon Heavy to result in the rocket leaving the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I hope it makes it far enough away from the pad that it does not cause pad damage.
